All things considered, then, it could be much worse. How long did you play before that?

My family made stringed instruments. Mostly violins, noting fancy. I grew up vith it, und learned to play vhen I vas very young. I gave it up in my 30s, though, zo...vhat...25 years of playing or zo? Zometing like dot.

I'm afraid I am unfamiliar with the tune. Where is its origin, or is it an original composition? Either way, I would be glad to learn its name.

Iz an old tune from my childhood, years ago. I vas taught de title as "Edelweiss", vhich iz a type of flower dot grows in de mountains in vestern Vohemar. Dot's vhere I grew up. Dere's vords, too. Let's zee if I can remember...

Und don't vorry about it, Mr. Holmes. Iz goot to talk vith hyu now! How long have hyu been playing? Growing up, I learned to make such tings as vell as to play dem. It vas de family business.

That is one craft that escapes me; I have not the patience nor the expertise to construct an instrument myself. However, I have nothing but the highest respect for those who have the skill: to play an instrument requires little, but to create that which creates....

I believe I am correct in deducing that you are aboard the 4423 at the moment? [sigh] A shame. I should like a look at your violin, for I may be able to tell you the maker. Do not discount the quality of a used violin: my own Stradivarius I was fortunate enough to discover in a dark corner of a dusty shop, and purchase for a fraction of its true value.
