OOC: Updated background for Dimo

Since things have recently been reworked so that all of the Girl Genius characters have an agreed-upon common background, I thought that I would repost my app, with the relevant things changed.

Con-crit would also be very much appreciated, if you've got it. Want to see Dimo tougher, scarier, or snarkier, or something else entirely? I'd like to know what you think of how I'm playing him.

CHARACTER INFORMATION-
Canon Character and Series: Dimo from Girl Genius by Phil and Kaja Foglio

In-Game Name: Dietmar Franz Maria Tatarescu, but prefers just "Dimo". It's far easier to yell in a fight, and not half as dorky-sounding as "Dietmar". Most folks don't know his full first name, and most of the people who know his second middle name are very, very dead.

Age: 366, but looks to be in his mid-30s

Gender: Male

Position & Ship: Seaman, 4423

Appearance: Dimo is a Jagermonster, or Jager for short, one of a race of construct soldiers created by a mad scientist some centuries ago. Along with the almost preternatural strength that comes from drinking the brew that turns one into a Jager, Dimo gained long, sharp claws that come in handy in a fight, unsettlingly sharp teeth, olive-colored skin, and luminescent yellow eyes that have no discernable pupils. He stands about 5'10", and is square-shouldered without being stocky. He has a broad face framed by scruffy, neck-length burgundy hair, and any facial hair that he has, with the exception of a small goatee, tends toward stubble. Both of his ears come to points, and his nose looks as though it may have been broken and set improperly at some time in the past. Dimo is by no means overwhelmingly handsome, but he does have a certain charm when he smiles, if you can get past the fangs. He looks to be in his mid-thirties. He dresses predominantly in earth tones, and wears a deep blue shirt that laces up at the neck and has gold embroidery at the collar and cuffs, black cotton fall-front breeches trimmed with red on the seams and tucked securely into a pair of scuffed knee-high brown leather boots, a knee-length brown vest with large pockets, and a brown leather belt with an ostentatious brass buckle. A brown leather bandolier holding four identical throwing knives crosses his chest, and he is never to be seen without his hat, an olive drab military cap with a pair of brass-rimmed goggles strapped to the front and a long yellow horsehair plume decorating the top. If he were to take off his shirt, you would notice a scar running around his upper arm right where the arm joins the shoulder. Dimo lost his left arm and hand to the venom of a nasty creature that he was fighting in a forgotten laboratory years ago, and while it was replaced, the scar, with Frankenstein-style stitches, can still clearly be seen. The arm is completely functional, though. He just likes to show off the stitches.

Personality: Dimo has always had a reputation for being "the smart one" in a group. Jagers are assumed by the general populace to be a little more than savage monsters, their only thought for blood, killing and the hunt. While this is occasionally true, particularly when you have a large of group of them together and they fall into a pack mentality, it isn't always the case. Dimo is proof of this. Having traveled with only a small cadre of companions for many years in the past, Dimo has learned to think on his feet, and is generally a few steps ahead of his friends when it comes to planning and strategy. He's alarmingly perceptive at times, but is, for the most part, rather humble about his intelligence. It's just something that he's good at, and he doesn't rub it in people's faces. He can come off as a bit jaded and world-weary, but the mood passes quickly as his enthusiasm for new people and new situations takes over. He's used to playing a "big brother" role in group dynamics, but is always ready to have fun, whatever form that fun may take. Dimo can also be quite debonair and dashing when he tries, and will good-naturedly hit on a lady that he finds attractive. He doesn't always take his target's interest in him into account before he makes a move, but if she turns him down, he takes it in stride. Love is a game, after all, and the more you practice, the better your aim gets. Dimo has a dry and slightly sarcastic sense of humor, but doesn't usually use it to put others down. He's more likely to comment on a situation than anything else, and he appreciates wit in others. His humor can also tend towards the black and morbid side of things, but again, is usually delivered cheerfully, even in the face of almost certain death.

How Well Can Your Character Hack?: Dimo would initially have no idea what he was doing, but might take to it fairly quickly. He learns well, and has a high retention rate for the things that he learns.

Abilities/Weapons: Like any other Jager, Dimo is a finely-honed fighter, solider, and predator all rolled into one. His reflexes, strength, and senses are all far superior to the best of normal human abilities, making his good at surviving desperate or unusual circumstances with ease. Dimo has a particularly keen sense of smell, and can tell the difference between individuals at some distance. He can track someone or something using only his nose, and it's come in handy many times in the past. He also has particularly dextrous hands, and can throw knives or improvised weapons with the best of them. His limberness extends to his other joints as well, allowing him to easily dodge most blows directed at him. With regards to weapons, Dimo prefers a simple approach: knives for distance, teeth and claws for hand-to-hand combat.

Weaknesses: If folks around him don't immediately follow the gist of a plan that he's laying out, Dimo's patience can sometimes wear thin. He's used to making decisions on his own, and depending on what he thinks of a situation, may occasionally question a superior's commands. This doesn't happen often, and if it does, he'll generally discuss the disagreement, rather than get angry about it. Dimo's also gotten so used to his superhuman state and abilities that his sense of what constitutes "dangerous" for non-Jagermonster individuals can be a bit off. What seems like a fun frolic to him might well be a life-or-death battle with terrifying monsters for someone else. He does fully realize how he looks to other people, though, and will sometimes use his monstrous traits to his advantage to cow someone to his way of thinking. He's used to normal folks not trusting him, and it may take him a while to express trust in return if some is shown to him. Dimo also tends to "rhino-hide" in a fight, and will steel his resolve and hide his pain or wounds until it's absolutely unbearable, which for a Jager, can be quite a while.

History: Dimo grew up in the outskirts of Mechanicsburg,a town in the east of Vohemar that's near the Badlands, the second child and first boy in a family with six children. (This was all 300+ years ago, in-game. Dimo is 331.) His parents made a modest living making and selling stringed musical instruments, and he grew up surrounded by music. Though he was never as good as his father or sisters, he did learn to play the violin fairly well. His job in the family was to process catgut (made from the intestines of sheep, no cats involved) and string the instruments. He picked it up quickly, and became quite good at it, to the amusement of the other kids in town. He became something of a bully in his early life, being bigger and stronger than the other boys around him. Dimo never received any formal schooling, but was quite proficient in the things that mattered: being able to do an excellent job at his work, and supplementing the family's diet with wild game. He never married, and as the oldest son, entered the military at the age of 18. He never had a high rank, but the pension that he received allowed him to take care of his parents in their dotage as his siblings went off to marry and start families of their own. His parents died when Dimo was in his 20s, and though he inherited the family business, the life of an instrument maker didn't really appeal to him, especially after the excitement of military life. Eager for something to get him away from a place filled with so many memories, Dimo left the family lands and shop to his elder sister, and volunteered for Jager service with the Heterodyne family. He is, quite possibly, one of the only people ever to actually volunteer for Jager service. Better men than Dimo had died from imbibing the Jagerdraught, but he was one of the lucky ones to survive the process. He was now a Jägermonster, an essentially immortal construct soldier who would dedicate life and limb to protecting the family of the scientist that he served. The brew gifted him with superhuman abilities and near immortality, as well as a new-found appreciation for really nice hats. The majority of the other Jägers that Dimo hung around with were also from Bavarian-esque communities as he was, and so retained their rather thick accents. This sometimes makes it difficult for non-Jagers to understand what they're saying. After serving for several years as a drill sergeant, Dimo was made a scout for his regiment, a detail that allowed him to hone his skills of observation to a fine point. Eventually, the descendants of the original Master disappeared without a trace, and the Jagerkin found themselves without a home or a family to protect. They voluntarily entered into service with a powerful local Baron, but sent out small groups of volunteers from within the ranks go out into the world and find an heir to the Master's title and lands. In this way, the Jagers could say that they had not abandoned their duty to their old masters. It was essentially a suicide mission, and the volunteers knew that they would never be able to come back. Dimo was one of these volunteers, and he, along with his fellow Jagerkin Maxim and Oggie, wandered the known world for years, never expecting to find more than a few monsters to kill. to their great surprise and delight, they managed to locate the Agatha Heterodyne, the young woman who was heir to the family name, and helped restore her to her rightful position as Mistress of all that her ancestors had gained. Agatha attempted to free Dimo and his party from their servitude, but they would have none of it. Instead, they set out on a quest to find her long-lost uncle and father, Barry and Bill Heterodyne. The four Jagermonsters parted ways with the utmost reluctance, and didn't see one another for five years. For the most part, Dimo kept busy as a caravan guard, hiring himself out to along the trading routes of the Badlands as protection against bandits and monsters alike. Recently, however, he heard stories of the 4423 from a traveler whose wagon he was protecting, and more specifically stories of a Jager or two serving as crew members. His curiosity aroused, Dimo signed on with the ship when a roster was passed around a bar in Trewe.

SAMPLES-

Third
Person (roleplay): Dimo looked at the map spread out over the dropped-down tail of the wagon with dismay. It was obvious that the person who'd drawn it didn't know these mountains at all, or if they did, they hadn't been there in at least twenty years. A lot of things change quickly in the Badlands--borders, towns, and rules. You had to be flexible to survive here, let alone thrive, and Dimo was nothing if not a survivor.

He shook his head. "Here now, give me dot pencil. Let me show hyu how dese things really look now around here." Swiftly sketching in the new roads that had taken the place of the routes shown on the map, he also drew in a mountain pass that the cartographer hadn't put in. "Ve can't go dis vay, not at dis time of year. Dis is no easy trip, like going to Boston in de fall. De pass gets pretty nasty, if hyu know vhat I mean, und hyu don't vant to tangle vith some of de things dot live up dere." Dimo grinned broadly, revealing an alarming number of very sharp teeth. "Doesn't mean dot I don't vant to, though."

First Person (journal): Ho yez...gots me a date later tonight. After spending most of de day cooped up in de transmission room helping out, it vill be very, very good to get out und do someting more fun. A pretty gurl or two, zome good beer, und a bar fight--vhat more could a Jager ask for?

I'm not sure about vun ting, though: does hyu give a gurl a hat on a first date?
