Or at least takes up a few minutes of my time. More to come, but for right now, here's a snapshot from Dimo's past.
"Diet-mar!" Arnella yelled, wiping her hands off on her apron with furious swipes. Her eldest son knew full well that he was supposed to be watching the children, but Nikolai was already making Elise cry, Vala and Rosamund were arguing over who got the prettier of the hair ribbons that their father had bought from a peddler, and Conrad was happily playing in the mud with the pigs. "Dietmar Franz Maria, you get over here right now! Conrad's not going to clean himself up, you know!"
With a longing glance back over his shoulder to the two girls at the gate that he'd been shamelessly flirting with, Dimo trudged around the side of the house to face his mother. He'd hunted bears before, big ones, but he'd rather be doing that with no weapon right now rather than face the fury of his mother. Arnella was not to be trifled with when she was in a good mood, and when she wasn't, like this, he just prayed to God and the Holy Virgin that his hide would be in one piece when it was all over and done with. "Mamma, it was only for a short time!" he protested, hands in his pockets and a sheepish grin on his face.
"And in that 'short time', look what's happened!" his mother shouted. "Get Conrad cleaned up, and see if you can calm Elise down. Vala and Rosamund should be helping me with the laundry," she said, raising her voice so that her eldest daughters could hear, "and Nikolai should be feeding the pigs!"
Walking swiftly over to his youngest sister, Dimo hunkered down so that he was on her level and used the edge of his embroidered sleeve to wipe the tears from her eyes. The six-year-old looked up at him gratefully, then slung her arms around his neck as he picked her up for a piggyback ride. One more sibling to go, then.
As they headed toward the pig sty to get Conrad, Elise looked thoughtully down at her brother and asked, "You ever gonna get married, Dimo? You could have kids, too!"
Dimo laughed despite himself. "After seeing Pappa and Mamma, I think I'll wait. Besides, I have you! And that's as much as I need right now."
